    davesque's MOVIE CHALLENGE!!!
AKA davesque invents his own meme.

Ok, so, someone recently sent me a link to this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FExqG6LdWHU

It's a youtube video (under 10 minutes) that has 100 clips from 100 different films. Each clip has a quote with a number in it, and the numbers count down from 100 to 1.

Because I'm a huge movie nerd, I decided that I would identify as many of the movies as I could. I was able to identify 42 of the movies. My challenge to you is to identify more movies than I did.

Here are the rules of the game. Now, we're operating on the Honor Code, and it will be very easy to cheat. The rules are simple:

    1) To identify each movie, you should be able to watch the clip and know the name of the movie without Google searching for the quote. In short, no fishing the internet for the answer.

    2) You do not have to have seen the movie to identify it. (I had one movie of the 42 that I was able to identify without having seen it... Yes, I've seen the other 41.)

    3) Compile the list, noting which number was associated with which film. Do this in Notepad or a comparable program. Do not do this in the comments section of this post, as you will be able to see other people's lists.

    4) Only when you've finished, comment on this post and post your list. Do not edit based on what other people wrote, or add other people's responses to your list. I will go first, and I invite you all to follow.

    5) After you've posted yours, you get bonus points if you can name the one movie on my list that I haven't seen. (Not an obligatory part of the game, although personally I think it's obvious which one it is, knowing what you likely know about me. I may be biased though, being that I'm, well, me.)

    6) If none of you attempt this, I will deeply offended.

Ok, already! Go watch the video now and start!

    Save the honeybees!
Apologies for not posting in a while. I'm thinking I'll start doing some longer posts, along with an update on the life of davesque, by the end of May.

In the meantime, here's something frightening for you to chew on:

I've often joked about wanting to kill off all the bugs on the planet (I believe some of you can confirm this), but this article is kinda scary.

Oh the pain this causes me. If you read the entire first paragraph, then (some of) you will know what I'm talking about.

Pizza Bagels: The Vision of a Better Tomorrow
I may have mentioned this discovery to one of you a while back, but I was so surprised that I thought I would mention it here.

Apparently, bagels and Jews do have a connection. I had always just thought that that was some sort of myth.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagel

The only reason I bring this up now is that I'm about to heat up some frozen pizza bagels.

But before I do that, I'm going to use this soapbox to say that I think that the pizza bagel is one of the greatest symbols of world harmony. I mean, the Italian capital is Rome, and the Catholics, and most Christian groups for that matter, have historically had a very sketchy relationship with the Jews (which has improved dramatically in recent years). The pizza bagel really embodies the ability of different cultures to get along and form something truly transcendent. It's a lot like the recent innovation of the Chinese/Japanese restaurant, the only place in the world where you can start your meal of sushi with a nice bowl of wanton soup.

If only all world conflicts could be solved with cuisine.

I mean, perhaps the only reason that the Cold War took so long is because Russian and American foods don't go well together. I mean, no one would ever want to dip cheeseburgers in borscht.

So, perhaps what the world really needs is fewer diplomats and just a whole lot more creative chefs.

And with that deep thought, I will leave you to defrost my bagels.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Boston Bomb Scare
I realize this old news, but I only caught wind of it today. In case you are also out of the loop, read this article:

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/01/31/boston.bombscare/index.html

Apparently it's widely believed that the prosecutors have absolutely no case against these guys.

    That said, go here:

I'm not a fan of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but this is hysterical.

    William Carlos Williams
I don't know if I've posted this before, but even if I have it's worth posting again.

I chopped down the house that you had been saving to live in next summer.
I am sorry, but it was morning, and I had nothing to do
and its wooden beams were so inviting.

    2
We laughed at the hollyhocks together
and then I sprayed them with lye.
Forgive me. I simply do not know what I am doing.

    3
I gave away the money that you had been saving to live on for the next ten years.
The man who asked for it was shabby
and the firm March wind on the porch was so juicy and cold.

Last evening we went dancing and I broke your leg.
Forgive me. I was clumsy and
I wanted you here in the wards, where I am the doctor!

This was sent to me as a suggestion for how I should grade exams as a TA, but I'm sure all of us have had professors that we know used this method.

    Worked for me!
What American accent do you have?
    Your Result: The Northeast

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

    "The Hobbit" movie news...
Because I know that some of you are depending on me for this sort of information:

    http://www.theonering.net/staticnews/1163993546.html

On the one hand, I'm really glad they're finally moving forward on the Hobbit, but on the other hand, this whole thing sounds like a recipe for catastrophe. I'm not just referring to the issues with Peter Jackson, but also this inter-studio stuff and this hazy "two prequel movies" concept sounds really sketchy.

    Amazing story featuring Robert Jordan
So, Robert Jordan has a blog.  I am deeply embarrassed (ok, not really) to admit that I do indeed check up on it from time to time, mostly to make sure he is still alive, because, as I imagine many of you know by now, he is terminally ill.

In any event, this is an incredible correspondence which took place on his blog. Only those of you who are familiar with Robert Jordan's writings, or, more importantly, his reputation as a writer of incredibly lengthy novels, will fully appreciate it.

    "Mr Jordan,

I just wanted to write a bit to you relaying a bit of a story you. When I was still in High school I first read The Eye of the World, I was instanty taken by the beauty of your writing, I became entralled with the world the characters the tales you created. Me and My best friend have since read and re-read your novels countless times, I got him to read The Wheel of time as a way to help him become excited about reading. Anyways, for the past 12 years or so, every year we get eachother something that reminds us of your books, includeign the books themselves. Last year I was deployed over to Iraq and things were at a low point in my life. Being in a combat zone is a hard experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I was sittign in my tent one after noon feeling the homesickness seeping in as it always did when mail call hit. I didn’t have many people that wrote to me while I was there but that day I recieved a package, I opened it and instanty felt as if my spirits had been lifted. My best friend had sent me a copy of The Eye of the World. It helpped me alot durring the down times to draw me away from the situation I was in. I was better able to understand my favorite character, Lan, through my own experiences. Lan had always inspired me, helpped to give me an idea of the type of man I wanted to become. That book was with me when I was injured out on patrol. I don’t know why but I had put it in my pack when I went out on patrol that morning. We came under fire that morning somethign I won’t go into great detail about. But when it was all over I was injured and had to be evacuated. When I was at the field hospital one of the medics came in and handed me my book which he had set aside while they were working on me. He told me I was one lucky SOB. I asked him what he ment, He just handed me the book, and there right through the book was a hole. I looked at it kind of stunned befor opening the book. Caught neatly in the pages of the book was a single round. Your book truely saved my life that day. The book had kept the bullet from entering my side and more than likely giving me a worse day than I had already had. I’m not mostly recovered and back in the states one thankful soldier for all the blessings that have been bestowed upon me. And especially thankful for you, indirectly or not you saved my life that day, if you hadn’t written these books well you understand. Anyway I wanted to tell you Thank you from the bottom of my heart. i will always keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

    My eternal gratitude,
SSG Travis Kennedy, US Army retired."

    Robert Jordan's response:

"For SSG Travis Kennedy, thank you very much, both for passing your story along to me — frankly, I never imaged one of my books saving anyone’s life, and I have passed your story on to various people under the title DO YOU STILL THINK I SHOULD WRITE SHORTER BOOKS? — and for the work you are now doing with our wounded undergoing rehab. Thank you doubly, for your service in the Sand, and for your service now."
